Laurie Ernest Myra, 69 of Western Shore, died at home January 15, 2010
with his family by his side, after a very short battle with ALS. Born
in Gold River, April 22, 1940, he was a son of the late Gladys
(Russell) (Myra) Minnick and the late Noble Myra. In his early years
he worked at Halifax Shipyards and then for Bridgewater Farmers Dairy
in the Chester area. He then went on to start his career as a
mechanic and started his own business, “Laurie’s Auto
Repairs” where he specialized as a Heavy Duty Mechanic, working
for over 40 years. He was a member of the Parish of St.
Martin’s Anglican Church, Western Shore. Laurie was a member
and Past Master of Masonic Charity Lodge No. 69, Mahone Bay having
joined in 1975. He was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Grace
Chapter No. 8, Lunenburg, joining in 1977 and later affiliated with
Shoreham Chapter No. 59, Chester. Laurie was a member of the Western
Shore and District Fire Department for 47 years. He was an Honorary
Fire Chief and was instrumental in the planning and building of the
addition to the Fire Hall in 1984. An avid outdoors man, he enjoyed
hunting with “the boys”. He enjoyed camping with his
children and friends from early on, starting out in tents with no
floors and working up to his fifth wheel trailer. Many a friends
company was enjoyed by the campfire. With the help of his wife and
sons, “Paradise Cottage” was built on Little
Vaughan’s Lake, as a place for them to enjoy in retirement. He
is survived and will be greatly missed by his wife, Stella (Swinamer),
his four children, Janet (Darrell) Eisnor, Blockhouse, David
(Michelle) Myra, Western Shore, Elizabeth (Alyre) Arsenault,
Hatchet’s Lake, Gordon Myra (Wendy Conrad), Martins Point. Six
grandchildren, Jeffery, Cassie, Nickolas, Krista, Emma and Andrew.
Two great- grandchildren, Allison and Elijah. Sisters, Sheila
(Merrill) Barkhouse, Maitland, Donna (Fraser) Hebb, Lower Vaughan and
brother, William “Bill” (Donna) Myra, Western Shore. He
was predeceased by a sister, Nancy in infancy and grandson, Jonathan.
Special thanks go to the ALS Society; Rudy, for all his help and
support; the Victorian Order of Nurses for their daily visits and
continued care, especially, Liz for her care and support at the end.
To Dr. Abriel for all his talks and guidance. Thanks to all who
brought food and comfort to the house as we gathered together for Dad
in his last days. Your kind thoughts and prayers were welcomed..

prayers and comforting words. Cremation has taken place under the
direction of Mahone Funeral Home, Mahone Bay. Visitation will be held
7:00 to 9:00 p.m., Monday, January 18, 2010 in Mahone Funeral Home. A
memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at St.
John’s Anglican Church, Chester Basin, Rev. Bonnie Baird and
Rev. Ron Barkhouse officiating. Interment will be in Western Shore
Cemetery. Family flowers only please. Memorial donations may be made
to ALS Society of Nova Scotia or Victorian Order of Nurses, Lunenburg
