E. Henry L. Barry

1917-2015

E. Henry L. Barry
It is with deep sadness and in celebration of a life well lived that the family of Edward Henry LeRoy Barry, announce his passing on Monday October 5, 2015 at the age of 98.

Born in Maitland, Lunenburg County on September 7, 1917 to Archie and Muriel Barry, he was the second born in a family of 12.

Brought up by his grandfather Anthony, Henry was encouraged to bicycle to Bridgewater to attend high school. He worked with Brookfield Construction in the early war years building prefab houses for a growing Halifax. In 1943 he joined the Department of National Defence first at Shelburne where he was charged with setting up a back-up ammunitions depot and then transferring to the Bedford Magazines in 1944. In 1953 the family moved to Port Wallis. He retired to Marriotts Cove in 1973 after a seven year stint at DND Renous, New Brunswick. In 1998 he and Ruby made their last move together to a cozy waterside condo in Mahone Bay. Following her passing in 2006, he resided in Bridgewater and finally at Rosedale Home for Special Care in New Germany. The church was a big part of Henry’s life. Always ready to lend a hand he served many years as Superintendent of Sunday School, elder, clerk of session, treasurer in various United Churches. All his life he maintained an acute interest in the work of the church and because of his idea and support, the services from Trinity United Church in Mahone Bay are televised to people in their homes. People who knew Henry enjoyed his wit, warmth, and wisdom. He had a logical, inventive mind. He could create a poem with ease, craft a whistle from an alder branch, transform words into spoonerisms, do complicated math in his head, and offer sage advice on most any topic. He was a crackerjack cribbage player and in later years enjoyed completing the daily cryptoquote. He was a wonderful father and husband who enjoyed spending time with his family, camping, travelling, fishing, always using the opportunity to unassumingly share his knowledge. He accomplished much without seeming to work hard. He had an uncanny ability to problem-solve using skills handed down from previous generations and his own common sense to simplify what most would consider complicated. Despite his gifts he was a humble man never seeing the talents he so willingly shared with others.

He was predeceased by his wife Ruby, father Archie, mother Muriel, grandfather Anthony Barry and uncle, Roy Barry (Clara) with whom he grew up, brothers and sisters Cecil (Marie), Helen (Archie) Seamone, Nellie (Donald) Feindel, George, Sidney (Hattie), Eric (Marjorie), Kenneth, Lloyd, and Isabel (Ray) Barry. Two siblings predeceased him in infancy.

He will be remembered with love by his daughter Ann, Marriotts Cove, numerous special nieces and nephews and the many friends he met along life’s way.

Visiting hours will be held 7-9 pm, Thursday, October 8 at Mahone Funeral Home, Mahone Bay, where a funeral service will be held 2pm, Friday, October 9, Rev. Lee Simpson officiating.

In his memory donations may be given Rosedale Home for Special Care, Trinity United Church (Mahone Bay) or the Garden of Rest Cemetery, Blockhouse.

Arrangements entrusted to the care of Mahone Funeral Home, P.O. Box 200, 32 Parish St., Mahone Bay, NS B0J 2E0 Tel. 902-624-8241. Online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting: www.mahonefuneral.ca
