Donald D. Croft

1928-2015

Donald D. Croft
CROFT, Donald Douglas. Age, 87, of Mahone Bay passed away October 22, 2015 at home with family and trusted feline companion, Jenny at his side.

Born February 15, 1928 in Hebbville, he was a son of the late Wilbert and Lois (Crouse) Croft.

He was a Charter Member of the Mahone Bay Lions Club, a former School Board Member and Mahone Bay Town Councillor. Don started his working career at the Royal Bank in Bridgewater. In 1958 he and his business partner, Jack Freeman purchased Mahone Auto Service. Donald retired in 1985 when he sold the business to two of his sons, David and John. He spent his retirement years travelling with his beloved Marie, fixing anything that needed fixing and making everything from furniture to back scratchers in his work shop. He had a love for the outdoors, spending many a day fishing and hunting with his brother Wendell and friends. On occasion Marie would join him for a troll around the many trout lakes he had discovered. Don was renowned for his open salt water navigational skills earning him the nick name of “Captain Crunch”. Don had a love for family and friends. It was almost a given that a large party would break out on a summer Sunday afternoon at Don and Marie’s cottage on Herman’s Island. The tradition continued when he and Marie moved into their “new” home in Mahone Bay in 1974. The salt water cove off the island was replaced by a stunning view of the bay from the “house on the hill” with a swimming pool and an outdoor brick fireplace to replace the open beach fires ensuring that the fun and friendships continued. In the years after Marie died in 2007, Don very much enjoyed eating out at the homes of family and friends. He continued to take pleasure being in his workshop for as long as his health would let him. He enjoyed his independence until the last few days of his life.

He is survived by children, David (Janet), Judy (Reid), Ken (Suzanne) and John (Mary Lou); grandchildren, Amanda (Casey), Daniel (Lindsay), Jonathan (Danielle), Samuel and Jacob; great grandchild, Veronica; sister-in-law, Violet and her daughter, Brenda (Harold).

He was predeceased by his wife, Marie; brothers, Wendell and Marvin (at child birth).

Visiting will be held 7-9 pm, this evening (Friday, October 23) at Mahone Funeral Home, Mahone Bay. A funeral service will be held 11 am, Saturday, October 24 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Mahone Bay, Rev. Stephen P. Kristenson officiating. Burial will be in Garden of Rest Cemetery, Blockhouse.
