Helen Marion Ernst

Helen Marion Ernst. Formerly of Blockhouse, passed away June 28, 2016 at Mahone Nursing Home, Mahone Bay at the age of 89 years.

She was a daughter of the late Allister and Emily (Mader) Ernst.

Due to her father’s illness, Helen left school at an early age to take over his duties as Post Master at Blockhouse, where she worked tirelessly to serve the public, allowing her younger siblings to remain at home under their mother’s care.

She will be lovingly remembered by sisters, Clarice Pearse, Blockhouse; Doreen O’Meara, Maders Cove; also by sisters-in-law, Joan Ernst and Mary Ernst, Toronto, Ont..

She was predeceased by brothers, Roderick, Warren and Bruce.

Helen cherished her nephews, Rod Jr., Gary, Gregory, Darrell, James, Steven and Gordon along with blessed nieces, Barbara, Cathy, Linda and Andrea. They all received special gifting from her kindness and generosity.

She was a member of St. James’ Anglican Church, Mahone Bay and the Federal Heritage Club. Helen spent her entire life in Blockhouse as Post Mistress for 43 years, retiring in 1987. Her service to her community of Blockhouse and district has been a wonderful accomplishment and a great reward of her life. After her retirement she devoted many years as caregiver to her mother before her mother’s passing in 2002. She enjoyed reading, gardening and travelling. Her pleasures included generous contributions to many charitable organizations and refurbishing the family home over the years.

The family requests memorial donations be made to the Garden of Rest Cemetery, Blockhouse.

Interment, attended by family only, will be held in Old Blockhouse Cemetery, Rev. Alvin Westgate officiating.

Visiting hours for family and friends will be held 2-4pm, Saturday, July 2 in Mahone Funeral Home, Mahone Bay.
