Joy M. Van Norden

Joy Marguerite Van Norden. Age, 93, of Ridgewood, Bridgewater and formerly of Western Shore, passed away after a courageous battle with COPD, Saturday, August 6, 2016 at South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater.

She was a daughter of the late Hosea and Beatrice (Veinot) DeLorey. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister and aunt. Born in Western Shore, she lived most of her life in Halifax. At an early age she moved with her parents and sister, Frances, to Queens Co. where her father worked as an electrician for Nova Scotia Light and Power. She lived at various sites along the Mersey River, including one at Town Site, Big Falls. She attended, along with about a dozen other pupils, a one-room school house. She graduated from Milton High School. While living in Halifax she was an active member of Edgewood United Church and a member of the Bluebell Group, for many years acting as treasurer. She was also a member of the Nor-West Seniors Club. She volunteered in the neo-natal ward of the I.W.K. Hospital as a “baby cuddler”. She was a former member of the Shriners Club and Royal Canadian Legion, Harding Branch No. 144, Western Shore. She and her husband loved to travel. Places visited were United Kingdom, extensively throughout Europe, Hawaii, Spain, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Mexico and most of the United States. Joy had many hobbies, including needlework, knitting “Teddies for Tragedies”, gardening and was an avid reader.

She is survived by her son, Wayne (Joyce) Van Norden, Kitchener, ON; five grandchildren, Tony (Diane) Van Norden and Tania (Darrell) Marchand; Tammy (Troy) Power, all of Upper Tantallon; Susan (Jack) Van Norden-Kaiser, Calgary, AB and Karen (Todd) Van Norden-Stewart, Kitchener, ON; ten great-grandchildren, Alexandra, Samantha, Victoria, Evan Van Norden; Carissa and Chase Marchand; Rebecca-Lynn and Jacob Power; Alyssa and Calli Stewart; great-great-grandson, Brycen Van Norden; sister, Joan DeLorey, Mahone Bay; former daughters-in-law, Elizabeth Cochran and Diane Van Norden; nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Clifford Milton Van Norden; son, Richard Van Norden; great grandson, Cole Marchand; sister, Frances Sawler; brother-in-law, Lorraine Sawler.

Family flowers only, please. If so desired, memorial donations may be made to the Western Shore Cemetery Fund; ALS Society of Nova Scotia or Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.

No visiting hours. A funeral service will be held 2pm, Thursday, August 11, 2016 at St. Mark’s Anglican Church, Martins Point, Rev. Peter Rafuse officiating, assisted by Rev. Ron Barkhouse. Burial will be in the Western Shore Cemetery.
