Dr. David and Heather Abriel
Heather Abriel, BA, BEd (age 64) and David Abriel, BSc, MD (age 63) of
Mahone Bay, passed away together, Thursday, February 2, 2017. Both
Heather and David were born in Halifax. David was pre-deceased by his
parents, Bernard and Katherine (Duggan) Abriel. He is survived by
sister, Joan (Abriel) Blood. Heather was pre-deceased by her father,
Charles Mason. She is survived by her mother, Sheila (Hunt) Mason and
sister, Susan Hallonquist (Mason). Heather and David are survived by
their children, Katie Abriel, Dan Abriel, Shelagh Abriel and
grandchildren, Eden and Elliot Kerr and Alice Abriel. David, beloved
father and grandfather, was a former GP and one of the leading
palliative care doctors in Nova Scotia and was an advocate for dying
with dignity. Heather, beloved daughter, mother, grandmother, a
former teacher and weaver, trained to be a harp therapist and spent
many years supporting David’s practice. They were a team.
David and Heather were well-loved and respected in the community for
their professional work and as musicians and artists, performing
regularly in the bands ‘Midlife Crisis’ and ‘Suite
Strings’. At sunset David was often heard outside playing his
bagpipes. They were also well known as Father Christmas and Mrs.
Christmas at the annual Mahone Bay Father Christmas Festival. Heather
and David were always great observers of nature, loving to camp and
hike in the wilderness, sketching and painting their way through life.
They loved life, lived every minute to the fullest and will be deeply
missed by their family, friends and the whole community. Their memory
will live on in all of us. A gathering for friends and the community
to meet the family will be held 1pm to 5pm, Saturday, February 11 at
