Emma Jean Nickerson

NICKERSON (Burgoyne), Emma Jean. Born, November 28,1922 in Oakland, NS., died April 15, 2017 in the Stroke Unit of South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater, NS, with family at her side.

She was a daughter of Harvey Harris Burgoyne and Emma Eliza (Mason) Burgoyne.

She is survived by children: James (Ann Marie), Jane (Tom), John and Joan, 4 grandchildren: Matthew, Laura and Angela Schwarzkopf and Sylvia Nickerson, and 4 great grandchildren: Otto, Paisley, Colin and Lillian.

She is predeceased by her husband Colin, sister Doris and brother Harold.

Growing up in Oakland, Emma attended the Mahone Bay School and lived in her family's ancestral home. She met and married Colin Nickerson (a returning war veteran) and three children ensued. Later she entered military life through her husband moving from base to base. A fourth child Joan followed. She believed in volunteerism, working in Hospital Auxiliaries and at the Brunswick Street Mission in Halifax along with children's groups including the Brownies. She was artistic and pursued pottery and metal ceramics. She had a fondness for bowling, cards, and all things humorous. After her husband's retirement she returned home to Oakland-Mahone Bay and enjoyed gardening, cooking, and up to 4 cats and 4 grand children.

The funeral will be held at Saint James Anglican Church, 63 Edgewater Street, Mahone Bay, 2:00pm, Thursday, May 4, 2017, followed by a reception in the church hall. Interment for family only shortly thereafter.

The family wishes to thank: the VON, Dr. P. McAuley, Lunenburg County Home Support, Moira for physiotherapy, South Shore Regional Hospital and special thanks to Melinda for gentle comforting care.
