Roy D. Lohnes

1946-2017

Roy D. Lohnes
It is with heavy hearts the family of Roy Douglas Lohnes (71) of Western Shore, announce his passing on August 9, 2017 after a courageous battle valiantly fought for many years. Roy wanted to leave this life in the home he built, surrounded by his loving and devoted family. Born in Upper Cape, NB, he was a son of the late Evelyn (Briggs) Throop, New Brunswick; later adopted and raised by the late Douglas and Dorothy (Dauphinee) Lohnes, Lunenburg.

Roy began his seagoing career at the early age of 15 on the fishing vessel, Cape Scatarie. He continued to fish full time on scallop draggers out of Adams and Knickle, Scotia Trawler, National Sea Products, Deep Sea Trawlers, Clearwater, and Pierce Fisheries. He then became Chief Engineer and fished for 37 years. The sea was his passion and he never missed an opportunity to be out on it.

In his early retirement years, Roy kept busy with woodworking; the happiest times were spent in his workshop building furniture and model boats, masterfully created. The model boats, built to scale, were modeled from boats he sailed on. Those model boats went all over the world giving Roy the opportunity to meet new friends and create many strong bonds along the way. The sea was his passion and he never missed an opportunity to be out on it and spending time with his many friends at the Oak Island Marina. Roy also loved being outdoors and took great pride in his yard.

Active in his community, Roy was a dedicated volunteer firefighter and member of the Western Shore & District Fire Department for 50+ years, never missing a garden party or parade. Roy loved everything about life and his happiest memories were times spent with his family. He was a loyal friend to many; a spirit, once met, not forgotten. Roy would want to be remembered as being full of love for his family and his faithful furry companion, Riley. A kind and compassionate person, he was always concerned for others and very selfless.

Surviving to cherish many precious memories are his devoted wife, Sharon (Hiltz); daughter, “the apple of his eye”, Sheri (Mitchell Fancy) of Maitland; and cherished granddaughter, Brooke Joudrey ("Peanut") of Bridgewater. He also leaves sisters Catherine Demone, Lunenburg; Patsy (Borden) Rhuland, Dean's Corner; Gloria (David) Estabrooks and Linda Hicks (Ron), Amherst, NB; and Dale (Dale) Cove of London, Ontario; brothers Billy Throop, Moncton, and Wendell (Bonnie) Throop, Sackville, NB; brothers-in-law Charles Zwicker, Chester Basin, and Doug (Donna) Zwicker, Western Shore; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Roy was predeceased by grandparents; sisters-in-law Esther Wylie, June Dorey, and Nora Zwicker; brothers-in-law Paul Zwicker, Clarence Dorey, Douglas Demone, and Byron Selig.

No visitation by request. A funeral service will be held at Aenon Baptist Church, 57 Highway 12, Chester Basin on Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Joe Green officiating. Interment at the Western Shore Cemetery. A reception will follow interment at the Western Shore and District Fire Hall and all are invited.

Family flowers only please. The family requests memorial donations be made in Roy's memory to SHAID Animal Shelter, Western Shore & District Volunteer Fire Department, Aenon Baptist Church, Lunenburg County VON, or a charity of your choice.
