David F. White

1935-2018

David F. White
WHITE, David Frederick. It is with great sadness the family announces David Frederick White, passed away peacefully in Dartmouth, NS on Monday, September 10, in his 84th year, from complications of Multiple Sclerosis. David devoted his career to helping others. He was a graduate of the University of Western Ontario Medical School and both practiced medicine and taught in London, Halifax, and Saskatoon. After residency, he followed his heart to London, England, young family in tow, to specialize in oncology and hematology. David returned to Canada and became the Senior Medical Oncologist at Victoria Hospital in London. He then became the head of Medical Oncology for the Nova Scotia Cancer Treatment & Research Foundation. He was subsequently recruited to open the new cancer clinic in Saskatchewan and became the Medical Director of the Saskatchewan Cancer Foundation. David practiced, published and lectured on the difficult subject of cancer at a time when research was formative. David was an avid sailor, and loved cooking and the daily crossword. He took pride in his children’s accomplishments and grandchildren’s milestones, reveling in his role as “Papa” to Taylor and Hannah. His retirement to Mahone Bay with Pat allowed him to set sail from his doorstep in his cherished Minuet which took him on many adventures including challenging the tides of the Bay of Fundy. A feat which made him a minor celebrity with the local coast guard. With his wife, Pat and two girls, David enjoyed exploring the world. Always a curious mind, wandering around Cartagena or Bethlehem seemed a normal family vacation. David enjoyed being with his family on vacations where he took charge of all the cooking and his children’s entertainment with delight. After Pat’s death he married Wilma and enjoyed many more years of traveling and great food and life by the sea as he loved. Predeceased by his beloved wife, Patricia (nee Pollard), he will be deeply missed by his daughters, Andrea (Brian Koturbash) and Heather (Jim Janzen); grandchildren, Taylor and Hannah; sister, Mary Airth Kindree, as well as his wife, Wilma (Stewart). David’s strength of character will in death, as in life, serve as an important resource for the family. The family wish to thank the staff of Lewis Hall, Parkland at the Lakes for their exemplary care. A service is planned for October 13, 2018 at 11:30am followed by a reception immediately thereafter at the Kilworth United Church, just outside of London, ON where David was a devoted member. A further memorial service is planned in Mahone Bay in the summer of 2019. In keeping with David’s service and devotion to the cause of curing cancer, consider a donation, in lieu of flowers, to The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation or Trinity United Church, Mahone Bay. Cremation and arrangements entrusted to the care of Mahone Funeral Home, P.O. Box 200, 32 Parish St., Mahone Bay, NS B0J 2E0 (902-624-8241).
