Mary O. Atwood
Mary Oxley Atwood (Stones). Age 93, of Mahone Bay and formerly of Bermuda, passed away December 3, 2014 in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater.

Born in Bridgewater in 1921, she was the daughter of the late Rev. George and Margaret (Hutchison) Stones.

She was predeceased by her husband, Brownell; brother, George Stones; sister-in-law, Anna Stones; brother-in-law, Neville Atwood and sister-in-law, Noma Durant Atwood.

Surviving are her son, David (Brenda), Ottawa, Ont.; daughter, Margaret, Head of St. Margaret’s Bay; three granddaughters, Melissa (Matt), Stephanie (Michel) and Amy; three great granddaughters, Mya, Avery and Ashley; nieces, Debra (Gilles) and Ginger; nephew, George (Liz).

Mary was a graduate of the Nova Scotia Teachers College, in Home Economics. After graduation, she joined her parents in Bermuda where her father was then serving as Minister of the Wesley Methodist’s Church, Hamilton. There she met her future husband, Brownell. Mary taught Home Economics within the Bermuda school system for 25 years. The last position she held was head of the Home Economics Department at Warwick Academy. After retirement, the Atwoods left Bermuda to make their home in Mahone Bay. A member of Trinity United Church, Mahone Bay, Mary had served on the Board of Stewards and as an Elder. She was a charter and life member of the United Church Women, a member of the Hospital Auxiliary and Women’s Institute.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Monday, December 8, 2014 in Trinity United Church, Mahone Bay, Rev. Lee Simpson officiating. Burial will take place 2 p.m., Wednesday, December 10, 2014 in the Old Knox Cemetery, Baddeck, Rev. Alison Etter officiating.

The family requests memorial donations be made to Trinity United Church, Mahone Bay; Greenwood United Church, Baddeck or Baddeck Cemetery Association.
