James Alfred Parker

1944-2024

James Alfred Parker
James (Jim) was born in Stratford, Ontario on February 19, 1944.

He attended high school at Stratford Central and in 1967 graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a Bachelor of Science in Honors Astronomy. Jim enjoyed a successful career teaching high school in Ontario, Quebec, and internationally. Due to polio, he was encouraged to run as therapy. As a result, he was an accomplished runner, winning medals as an individual and as a member of the Western relay team. In the 1966 Nationals, he won gold in the 300 metre race, setting a Western and Canadian record. He was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at Western in 2001, “W” Club Hall of Fame in 2010, and the Stratford Sports Wall of Fame in 2024. Jim was also a committed track coach at the high school and university levels. His best memories were of watching his athletes mature; many becoming Canadian champions and Olympians.

Jim was a “Queen Scout” and represented Canada at the 1959 Jubilee in the Philippines. He was a member of the London Police Pipes and Drums, and, after moving to Nova Scotia, the RCMP Halifax Pipe Band. His other passion was sailing and, as a CYA instructor, was still teaching at the time of his death.

Jim was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, always ready to offer advice and provide support. He leaves behind his beloved wife Mary of Mahone Bay, daughters Kim (Mark) and Jennifer (Jose) and grandchildren: Parker, Beatrice, Kai. He is survived by his brothers John (Yvonne) and Jeff (Anita).

He is predeceased by his father Alfred (2006) and his mother Lillian (2021).

Visitation will be held at 2pm, followed by a Celebration of Life at 3pm on Friday, August 2nd 2024, both will be held at Grace Anglican Church, 5533 Hwy#3, in Chester Basin. Reception will follow.
