Bernard "Bernie" Joseph Rogers

1947-2025

Bernard "Bernie" Joseph Rogers
It’s with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Bernard (Bernie) Joseph Rogers, 77, of Indian Point, on May 9, 2025, following a hemorrhagic stroke.

He was a cherished husband, proud father, beloved grandfather, brother, and a friend to many. Bernie is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Deborah (née Jensen), children, Stephen and Daniel (Jordan), and precious granddaughter, Lily. He is also survived by his cherished siblings, Gary (Cindy), Norma Findlay, Carol Rogers, Gail Kenney (Barry), and Coleen Youden (Darrell). Additionally, he is survived by his much loved-nieces and nephews, and Cindy Innes, who held a very special place in his heart.

He was predeceased by his dear parents, Margaret and Bernard Rogers, and brothers-in-law, Bob Findlay and Henry Marchand, and sister-in-law Donna Marchand.

Bernie was born on November 24, 1947 to Margaret and Bernard Rogers in Halifax. He attended St. Francis School and went on to graduate from St. Patrick’s High School in 1965. He earned his undergraduate degree from St. Mary’s University (Class of 1968), then obtained a diploma at Nova Scotia Technical College in 1970, as a Mechanical Engineer.

For five years he worked with Canadian General Electric in Peterborough, Ontario. In 1975, he returned to Halifax and worked for 32 years with Public Works and Government Services Canada. He continued to meet with lifelong friends, made during his career, at monthly retiree luncheons.

Bernie served for 15 years as a member and former chairman of the board for St. Vincent’s Guest House. He was a lifelong and active member of Canadian Martyr’s Church in Halifax. Following the move to Indian Point in 2004, he enjoyed attending St. Norbert’s Roman Catholic Church in Lunenburg.

Bernie was a former member of Peterborough Curling Club, Halifax Mayflower Curling Club, Ashburn Golf Club, and was most recently a member of Osprey Ridge Golf Club. He was a member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia. He had very much enjoyed being a member of Highland Heritage Scottish Fiddle Group.

When the children were young, the family owned a cottage on Mill Lake in Hubbards. Bernie enjoyed playing the guitar, fiddle, keyboard and accordian. Each summer in Indian Point, he tended to both flower and vegetable gardens and had annual disagreements with the local deer regarding the purpose of the rhododendrons. He was also a member of the Mahone Bay Garden Club. Bernie was often seen at community events at Indian Point, such as the annual road and cemetery clean ups.

He was a humble, caring, and generous person.

A special thanks to Father Keith Billard. Additional thanks to family physicians, Dr. Morris Trager (retired) and Dr. Kory Jollymore, and to Dr. Jeff Ratushny and all the staff at South Shore Regional Hospital for their excellent and compassionate care.

There will be no visitation. A funeral mass will be held at St. Ignatius of Layola Parish (Bedford Highway, Halifax) at 12:15pm on Wednesday, May 14. No flowers, please. Those wishing to make a donation may contribute to St. Norbert’s Roman Catholic Church in Lunenburg, the Indian Point Fire Department, or SHAID in Lunenburg County. Family graveside service will occur at a later date.
