Eileen Noona (Balcome) Hubley
1944-2025
It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Eileen
Noona Hubley (Balcome), age 81, on September 19, 2025, at South Shore
Regional Hospital. Born on March 7, 1944, Eileen was the daughter of
the late Aubrey and Pauline Balcome, daughter-in-law of the late
Lindsay and Ruby Hubley.
She was predeceased by her sisters and their husbands, Maxine and Eric Wile and Corrine and Brian Everett. She was also predeceased by brother-in-law, Graham Hubley (Louise), Brother and sister-in-law, Robin and Elaine Hubley and sister-in-law, Brenda Langille (Darren).
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Harold. She was a proud and loving mother to her children, Kerby Hubley and Denise (George) Zwicker, who will forever cherish her guidance and love. She will also be deeply missed by her siblings, Marlene (Paul) Burgess, Christine (Frank) Veinot, Harry (Nancy) Balcome and Joanne (Max) Meisner. She was Aunt Eileen to 22 nieces and nephews, and several great nieces and nephews.
An extremely talented and innovative artisan, Eileen discovered her passion for basket weaving after taking a course and quickly caught “basket fever,” turning it into a lifelong love. She generously shared her craft by teaching classes to others. She was a gifted quiltmaker, serving as a quilt maker for Suttles and Seawinds for over 40 years. She was an exceptionally talented seamstress who could sew, fix or alter anything. Often working without a pattern or making her own. She was endlessly curious and creative, always eager to learn a new craft, and had a natural talent for working with her hands.
Eileen was an active individual from a young age, playing sports growing up and carrying that energy and sense of adventure into her adult life. She loved exploring new places and would start getting “twitchy” if she lived in one place for too long! She grew up in Blockhouse, and throughout her life she made warm and welcoming homes in Winnipeg, Newburn, Blockhouse, Barss Corner, New Germany, Barrington Passage, Atwoods Brook, Mahone Bay, and Bridgewater. She loved moving around but her heart was still in Winnipeg!
Eileen was a great cook, and she loved to bake. The cookie jar in her kitchen was always full! She was a devoted gardener who could grow anything, indoors or out, and she loved feeding and watching birds and other wildlife.
Beyond her artistry, Eileen was an active and dedicated member of her community, always willing to volunteer. She served as a leader of St. James C.G.L. in Mahone Bay, a member of the Barss Corner Women’s Institute, the Parkdale–Maplewood Museum and the Balmoral Rebekah Lodge, where she built lasting friendships and contributed to causes close to her heart.
She will be remembered for her kindness, resourcefulness, and her quiet strength. Eileen touched many lives with her selfless generosity, often going without so she could do for others. She will be deeply missed.
A celebration of Eileen’s life will be held on Sunday, October 5th, from 2:00–5:00 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion, Mahone Bay.
