Later, he and his family moved to Richmond, Virginia, USA, spending ten years there after his father was appointed Chief Medical Officer of Public Health for that State. Dad graduated from High School in Virginia, returning to Canada to undertake studies at Dalhousie University where he graduated with M.Sc. in Physics (Honours) and Mathematics. Additional studies at the University of Toronto led to another graduate degree in Meteorology. Dad married Mother, the former Elizabeth Margaret Spence of Saint John, N.B., in 1940. They were the closest of companions for 71 years thereafter. With her, he had two children, daughter, Janet Elizabeth Marguerite and son, Arthur Angus Spence. Around the same time, Dad began his career as a meteorologist at the RCAF base in Goose Bay, Labrador, in the mid forties. After several years in the North, he and his family returned to Ottawa, Ontario, where he continued in the weather forecasting business. He returned to his home in Nova Scotia in the mid 50's and changed the focus of his career efforts to that of Research Scientist working in the field of underwater acoustics at the Defence Research Establishment in Dartmouth. He retired from there in 1973, after a service of 35 years. The best time of his life began after retirement when he and Mom moved to their long time home by the ocean “Strathspey” at Indian Point, Lunenburg, Co.. Here he had the greatest of pleasures indulging in his favourite passions of sailing, contributing daily to the Maritime Weather Net, Ham Radio (VE1EP) and numerous other ventures for the next thirty-eight years.
